Description: The Nkonkobe Local Municipality is a Category B municipality established in 2000 and is made up of now disestablished Transitional Local Councils. Alice is a legislative seat and KwaMaqoma (Fort Beaufort) is the administrative seat. The latter is situated about 140km north-west of East London on the R63 and is approximately 200km north-east of Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).
The municipality is the second-largest local municipality, constituting 16% of the surface area of the Amathole District Municipality. Nkonkobe Municipality is a countryside municipality that sits at the foot of the ever-imposing and majestic mountain range of the Winterberg (IiNtabazeNkonkobe).
