Organisation Profile

SALGA is a constitutionally mandated organisation responsible for local government oversight. SALGA performs two key strategic roles within the system of government: as protector, enforcing the rights of local government sector, and a disruptor, constructively disrupting areas of existing systems that make it impossible for local government to deliver on its mandate.

SALGA brings focus to its mandate of supporting local government transformation, characterised by a highly diverse membership made up of 257 municipalities. In terms of its amended Constitution, SALGA is a unitary body that consists of a national association spread across nine provincial offices. SALGA actively participates in the intergovernmental relations system.
